To try and help promote news and events within the village, and get the email bulletin sent on a monthly basis, we are going to trial publishing a monthly article which just lists recent posts, upcoming events, and any documents uploaded recently (eg. newsletter, parish council minutes).

If you have something you feel should have been on here, or would like in future posts, please do let us know using the contact page on the website.

New pop-up exhibition from Easter

Shops, Pubs and other Businesses from Dorchester’s past

Please can you help?

As part of the Dorchester Festival, on 5 May three Museum and Historical Society volunteers are repeating their popular themed walk exploring Dorchester’s past.

The Museum plans a pop-up exhibition to complement the walk.

Can you help by lending or donating objects related to Dorchester’s businesses from bygone times, especially those which no longer function?

We have, for example, a painting of the George, a milk bottle from Belcher’s dairy (lent by James Pratt), invoices from old shops, a shop ledger from Fletcher’s store, some pub/hotel menus and several photographs. Please do contact me if you can offer any similar items:

Margot Metcalfe, Curator, museum@dorchester-abbey.co.uk, or phone 01865 340054.

School Newsletter : January 2024

After a hectic Christmas term, children have settled incredibly well back into school and are busy getting stuck into their Spring term topics; Superheroes for our younger children, Anglo Saxons in Year 3 and 4 and Rivers in Year 5 and 6.

We are also working hard to raise money for our special community event in the summer as we are part of the Sobell House Oxtrail through the city. We will soon be receiving our mini ox to decorate but we need to raise the funds before this can happen.

The children at Dorchester St Birinus Primary school would like to invite you to their very special festival of lights. This will take place in the school hall on Tuesday 6th February at 3pm until approximately 3.30pm. You are welcome to come and join us for some singing and poetry by candlelight with candle holders created by our children. This event has been arranged to raise money for the Sobell House Ox trail that we are taking part in later in the year.

We are suggesting a minimum donation of £2 and we hope you will join us for this important opportunity to raise funds for a fantastic charity: Sobell House Hospice in Oxford. There is no need to book. Just turn up on the day.

We have spaces in school and you are welcome to come and visit us to see what we can offer your child. You can find out more from our website here: https://www.st-birinus-pri.oxon.sch.uk/

Christmas and New Year 2023

abbey snow

With Christmas and New Year coming up, there are several things coming up to look forward to, whether listening to a concert, making some purchases from local artisans, or just enjoying the sparkling lights.  So I wanted to create a special christmas/new-year page to share all the things you could do in the village.  Note that I hope this page will show more over the coming weeks, so please do look back.

If you know of any other events happening in the village (or that would be of strong interest to the local villagers), things being sold which would be ideal for presents, please do let me know using the sites contact form, and I will try to get them added.
