School Newsletter : January 2024

After a hectic Christmas term, children have settled incredibly well back into school and are busy getting stuck into their Spring term topics; Superheroes for our younger children, Anglo Saxons in Year 3 and 4 and Rivers in Year 5 and 6.

We are also working hard to raise money for our special community event in the summer as we are part of the Sobell House Oxtrail through the city. We will soon be receiving our mini ox to decorate but we need to raise the funds before this can happen.

The children at Dorchester St Birinus Primary school would like to invite you to their very special festival of lights. This will take place in the school hall on Tuesday 6th February at 3pm until approximately 3.30pm. You are welcome to come and join us for some singing and poetry by candlelight with candle holders created by our children. This event has been arranged to raise money for the Sobell House Ox trail that we are taking part in later in the year.

We are suggesting a minimum donation of £2 and we hope you will join us for this important opportunity to raise funds for a fantastic charity: Sobell House Hospice in Oxford. There is no need to book. Just turn up on the day.

We have spaces in school and you are welcome to come and visit us to see what we can offer your child. You can find out more from our website here: https://www.st-birinus-pri.oxon.sch.uk/

Christmas and New Year 2023

abbey snow

With Christmas and New Year coming up, there are several things coming up to look forward to, whether listening to a concert, making some purchases from local artisans, or just enjoying the sparkling lights.  So I wanted to create a special christmas/new-year page to share all the things you could do in the village.  Note that I hope this page will show more over the coming weeks, so please do look back.

If you know of any other events happening in the village (or that would be of strong interest to the local villagers), things being sold which would be ideal for presents, please do let me know using the sites contact form, and I will try to get them added.

Alyce Chaucer – the story continues

Alyce Chaucer was Geoffrey Chaucer’s granddaughter and became Duchess of Suffolk. She lived in Ewelme for many years and is buried in a fine alabaster tomb in St Mary’s Church, Ewelme. If you have read Christina Hardyment’s novel about Alyce, The Serpent of Division, you’ll want to know that Volume 2 of the series, entitled The Book of the Duchess, will be published on October 22, and will be available in the museum shop and from Linda Hender (lindakhender@gmail.com)

School Newsletter : October 2023

We have enjoyed a really positive start to our school year here. All our children are working hard and learning lots. As we move towards Christmas we have lots of exciting things planned such as a visit to the panto and lots of Christmas singing. We are really looking forward to supporting the HfT’s Christmas celebration in the Abbey where we will be singing. Our forest school provision continues to be funded by the Hurst Water Meadow Trust. Our children really value the opportunity to learn outdoors; getting muddy and having lots of fun with our specialised forest school teacher. The lovely folk at Wallingford Book Shop are curating a wish list for our school. If you would like to purchase a book from our list as a donation we would be very grateful and the shop will give a discount. Just pop in and tell them you would like to buy a book from our list and they will show you what's available. Many thanks. This is in addition to our Amazon list that can be found here: https://www.amazon.co.uk/hz/wishlist/ls/3EAI7Q6N5EB2E?ref_=wl_share If you would like to come and see what we can offer your child, have a tour and meet the staff and governors then please come to our open morning on Thursday 9th November. There is no need to book: just turn up any time between 9.30am and 11.30am. We would love to see you. We run a breakfast club and an after-school club in addition to extra-curricular clubs such as a stories club, a science club, board games and hockey.
