From the Chairman of the parish Council

What is your parish council for? Well time for me, as your new Chairman to explain what we do. Before I do so though, I’d like to pay tribute to my predecessor, Chris Hill, who has led our parish council with distinction for the past few years. Thank you Chris.

So, on to what we are for. Well we don’t do schools, bins, roads or footpaths. What does that leave? You’d be surprised. One thing we do is provide a distinct Dorchester voice with our District and County councillors on the decisions those bodies make that do affect our village and our lives. But in addition we get a chance to make a difference to the things than can make Dorchester just that bit better, that bit more special.

Over the past couple of years we have spent a lot of our effort on looking after Dorchester’s interest with the Oxford to Cambridge Expressway and where gravel extraction might take place as well as improving things like our cemetery and bus service. But with a new council, this month, we took the opportunity to discuss what we’d like to do in our village over the next couple of years. The themes round the table were ones I hope are familiar to you; smartening up the footpaths, verges and flower beds around the village; doing more on cycle racks and links to the X39/40 bus; doing more to develop more affordable housing; and more.

You may agree or disagree with these priorities. Either way I’d love to hear from you. Its not everybody’s cup of tea to attend a council meeting in the village hall on a Wednesday evening to tell us what you think, but if not, don’t be shy, tell me what you think and would like your council to do for our village. You can contact me on chairman@dorchesteronthames.co.uk

I’ll keep you updated as the months go by on how we get on and hopefully hear from some residents with your views.

Mark Williams
Chairman of DoT Parish Council

Parish Council Minutes : February 2019

The February Parish Council Minutes are now online, and can be accessed from https://www.dorchester-on-thames.co.uk/parish-council/council-minutes/

Some topics covered:

  • Village School has become a registered charity
  • Planning applications
    • Tenpenny Single storey extension
    • Demolition of bungalow on Abingdon Road to be replaced with 2-storey family home
    • Village green application for Dyke Hills has been delayed
  • Objection will be be sent to SODC about local plan due to apparent lack of integrated thinking about public transport on buses and facilities for cyclists, which had led to the Plan’s transport provisions being unsustainable.
  • Although there is as yet no confirmed organiser it was agreed that the date for this year’s Dorchester Fireworks Display should be provisionally set as Saturday 2nd November

Oxford to Cambridge Expressway Update

At the end of November we were relieved to hear from Highways England that Dorchester no longer lies within one of the two possible corridors currently proposed by Highways England for the massive Oxford Cambridge Expressway development. In fact, the most southerly of the two corridor options put forward in the latest plan would be near the Golden Balls roundabout at Nuneham Courtney at the closest point to Dorchester.

However, before we relax and assume that this threat is no longer a cause for concern we ought to be mindful that these are early days and much could change. Our experience with PAGE, the on-going campaign set up to prevent large-scale gravel extraction around our village and neighbouring areas, shows that decisions on this scale often take a lot longer to conclude than anticipated.

Revised Expressway plans have to be expected as everyone else will be raising objections and oppositions to any route close to where they live and these might radically change everything.
So it was agreed to continue our support, operationally and financially, for the Expressway Action Group’s initiatives to safeguard the environment and countryside around us. We will remain closely engaged in this fight to prevent a multi-lane highway being built next to us and will keep Dorchester residents informed as things develop.
